ESCRITORAS is an on-line catalogue of Portuguese Women Writers active prior to 1900. The use of the word Portuguese in this context should be understood in a broad sense, as broad as the political, geographic and linguistic borders of the Portuguese cultural area and of its changing configurations between 1490 and 1900. This means the inclusion of women writers born in Brazil, Africa and India during Portuguese rule. Because learned men and women born in Portuguese territories before 1700 wrote indifferently in Portuguese, Spanish and Latin, the same broad understanding led to the inclusion of their texts in languages other than Portuguese. The same inclusive criteria was applied to the concept of “Writer”: all the women listed are considered as Writers, regardless of the genre in which they wrote, of the volume of their textual production, of the way they disseminated their works, of the number of their readers, of the financial gains they obtained from this activity, or of their claims to originality.
